A Siouxland man is sentenced to life behind bars after he murdered three Yankton, South Dakota residents.

Fifty-eight-year-old Ernest Tupper received three consecutive life sentences this morning (Tuesday) after facing a judge at the Yankton County District Court.

Restitution has also been set at nearly $24,000 for the families of the victims.

Tupper originally pleaded guilty, but claimed he was mentally ill.

He was charged for the shooting deaths of Chassidy Bamsey, Robert Riibe and Brian Van-Wagner at a Yankton apartment building last September.

Tupper will carry out his sentence at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls.
