Drugs may have played a role in an accident that left one Sioux City man dead and landed another behind bars.

Iowa State Patrol found the body of 46 year-old John Wakefield on the side of I-29 near Whiting early Tuesday morning.

Further investigation revealed that the Sioux City man was travelling with Jermaine finley when they stopped on the side of the road. Wakefield was then apparently hit by a semi and Finley took off.

He is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, driving without a license, and making a false report to law enforcement.

According to newly released court documents, Finley says he lied to investigators and fled the scene of the accident because they were high on drugs and he was driving without a license.
