Tuesday was election day for many Siouxland school districts, from school buildings to school boards.
Hinton, IA:
In Hinton residents voted on a proposed $9.5 million dollar project to build a new elementary school. Over 800 people came to vote on the proposed project.
The project passed overwhelmingly, with 536 Yes votes and 280 No votes.
Hinton Superintendent Larry Williams was beyond pleased with the results. "That means the board will get down to work with its architects and I will get down to work with the architects and we will be planning for the future right away. This is very happy news for the kids in the district and for the community as a whole for its future, its building for the future," says Williams.
The new addition will be built on 24-acres of farmland near the current school. They hope to have it done within two years.
Sergeant Bluff, IA:
Folks in Sergeant Bluff voted down a levy that would've paid for improvements at the high school.
Question *B* failed by a vote of 335 to 229.
The $5 million dollar project would've built an addition onto the high school, and cost property owners an extra $52 a year, per $100,000 dollars worth of property.
The levy would've helped the school address problems from growing enrollment, including paying for building construction, maintenance and new computers.
Sioux City:
In Sioux City five candidates were on the ballot for three open seats on the School Board.
The winners are incumbents Doug Batcheller (2,003) and Nancy Mounts (1,841) and newcomer Molly Williams (2,237).
