Retail Sales Tax Revenue Up in Siouxland

Retail Sales Tax Revenue Up in Siouxland

Posted: Updated:

It looks like some stores across the Tri-State region are ringing up more sales following some tough times.

In South Sioux City, Neb. this July, retail sales tax revenues were up 3.5% from last year. The highest recorde July ever for the city.

"I think it's an indication that things have been pretty steady over the last year. We've had slight downs, but mostly ups. And that's good news." says South Sioux City Treasurer Nanci Walsh.

And sales tax revenue has jumped 30% in Sioux City since 2005.

"There's been a long held notion that the City of Sioux City was underserved by retail and I think that just the growth since Lakeport Commons has been built and other areas have grown to support that... We really are a regional draw when it comes to retail purchasing."says Bob Padmore, Assistant Sioux City, City Manager.

Bringing in new business has certainly helped, but officials say bringing more people to the area may be the key.

"A lot of it has to do with the Roth Industrial Park continues to grow. And as you bring more industrial, an industrial environment, you need to have more services." says Dan McNamara, Economic Development Director in South Sioux City.

In North Sioux City, SD, they've seen a very strong summer when it comes to retail sales. They attribute it to their population doubling every day with people coming to work, shop, and gamble.

All three cities expect things will only go up from here.
