Group says Neb. children struggling

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A report by a group that helps low-income people says that one in seven Nebraska children can't count on his or her next meal.

The report, released on Tuesday by the Nebraska Appleseed Center for Law in the Public Interest, also cited U.S. Census data showing that more than 13% of the children in Nebraska live in poverty.

Rebecca Gould (goo-OLD), executive director of Nebraska Appleseed, said the figures show just the beginning of the impact the recession will have on families.

The group suggests expanding child-nutrition programs in Nebraska, that more money be given to school-breakfast programs, and that more children be made eligible for free breakfast and lunch programs that exist at public schools.
