It's the season of giving, or is it?
National surveys suggest its not.
There's been a significant drop in giving to american charities already, and the holidays haven't even begun.
Well you may not want to believe it, but it's here.
The holidays, and with many folks cutting back because of hard times, it could leave non profits left in the cold.
Tis the season, for folks to start thinking of those who are less fortunate.
But are they this year?
"I'm very very concerned going into christmas because just of all we see of layoffs, and unemployment, says Commanding Officer of the Salvation Army Von Vandiver.
Local non profits like the Salvation Army and the Sioux City Gospel Mission, rely on donations of money and goods, to be able to feed, clothe and be Santa Clause for those who can't do it on their own.
"The donations for this year have been very steady for us so we're thankful for that, but we are still below what we need to bring the end of the year into balance, says Harold Yautzy of Sioux City Gospel Mission.
Donations may be low, because some people have to cut back.
"Maybe where we were giving $25 or $30, we're trying to give $10 or $15, so we're still trying to give something but we've cut back."
Both organizations say so far, they are doing okay.
But they're still counting on your generosity this holiday season.
"I realize folks are having a difficult time right now, and i just hope they don't forget those that are in need, adds Vandiver.
The two non profits also say they've seen a huge increase in demand, so it's more important than ever for folks to donate what they can.
The Salvation Army started taking applications for Christmas assistance today.
After only three hours, more than 70 people had already signed up.
