Omaha area to get new road-clearing signs

Associated Press - November 18, 2009 6:25 AM ET

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Department of Roads are working together to help install new quick-clearance road signs in the Omaha area.

The project is an effort to quickly and safely clear interstates in Omaha following minor crashes.

Some 40 signs will be placed along Interstates 80, 680 and 480. The signs will inform motorists to move all accidents to the shoulder of the road.

Authorities hope the signs will reduce the likelihood of a second crash following a fender-bender in the middle of an interstate. Officials also say quick clearance will protect responders and victims from exposure to adjacent passing traffic.
