For many people, losing weight is a New Years resolution. But some folks are using this holiday season as inspiration.

To help keep you from gobbling up all the holiday treats... The Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA developed Holiday Trimmings. It's a free, six week program that provides workout plans and eating strategies to keep you from over indulging.

"It kind of keeps them on track. But it also gives them a good idea of what to do in order to meet those healthy goals." says Wellness Director Melissa Walker.

Here are a few tips from instructors:

Portion control allows you to eat what you want, as long as it's in moderation.

"Don't wear loose clothing. You wanna wear something that's a little bit tighter. That way you don't have that excuse that you know, you can undo the top button of your pants or anything of that nature." says Walker.

Run around with younger family members. If your in–laws are stressing you out, use fitness as a form of therapy.

"You get a little bit up tight with new people around. I've got newer people coming tomorrow. And it helps settle you down and relax you." says Rob McElhany of Sioux City.

If Holiday Trimmings participants are able to maintain or lose weight between Thanksgiving and New Years, they get twenty dollars off a future fitness program.
