Community members are pulling together to meet an alarming need at one Siouxland health center and the generosity of others is making bright smiles for many– a reality.
A good first impression can be a difference maker– a lot of the time it's your smile that is a big part of that.
But with the rising costs of dental coverage– many are running out of options.
It's a fact that leaves many dentists frowning.
Only 37% of kids aged 0 to 20 receive any kind of dental services in Sioux County.
It's also an alarming stat to board members of the Greater Sioux Community Health Center.
"Dental care is something that can affect someone's overall healthcare. We've heard just shocking stories of people who have had what could have been a small matter– a cavity or a filling and its ended up and caused severe trauma, illness and in some cases– death." Says board President, Melissa O'Rourke.
The health center opened its doors in July of 2008 to provide affordable healthcare to the greater Sioux County region.
Since then, they have gained 1300 patients, most of which have no where to go for their dental services.
To address that need, the center has plans to open a dental clinic in early 2010.
"The good thing is, we have the space, but it's just roughed in now. So we need the dollars to finish the building out that and get it ready so that we can put dental chairs and equipment in there and furnish it for the needs." Says O'Rourke.
Nearly $100,000 is needed to make their "Bright Smiles" campaign a success.
A big boost to the campaign– a local dentist and his wife will volunteer their time after seeing first hand the need in their community.
"There definitely is a need there and that there are people with the ability to do the services and I think the clinic is able to provide a facility where the need and those with the gifts to give are able to make it happen." Says Ken Addink, a General Dentist
Board members at the greater Sioux community health clinic are asking if anyone would like to help bring brighter smiles to the region– to contact them.
