Tyson Events Center May Face Stiff Competition

Posted: Updated:

The Tyson Events Center has seen a variety of top-notch concerts and attractions over the years creating valuable revenue. And Sioux Falls, South Dakota wants a piece of the pie.

Although they already have a city arena, a bigger and better one could possibly be in their future.

Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce Representative, Evan Nolte, says, "I know you've experienced this in Sioux City with your Tyson Center – the ability to attract larger concerts to the region, so this would be part of it, but an even larger part would be the proposed project would create an additional $51,000,000–53,000,000 of economic impact every year."

A 12-15 thousand seat event center would cost upwards of $150,000,000, but plans are still pending legislative approval and funding sources. Tyson representatives say if this arena is built, it could hurt Sioux City.

Tyson Representative, Erika Newton, says, "There's always the potential for that. Even with the Sioux Falls arena that's up there right now. We still always have competition from Omaha and from Sioux Falls just based on the geography of where we're located."

And in order for Sioux City to stay competitive with high–end events, Newton says, it's going to take support from the city.

Newton adds, "At the end of the day, the promoters want to see that our market can sell tickets, so if we continue to do well and our local ticket buyers continue to purchase tickets, then we'll continue to solidify those relationships."

Tyson representatives say talk about a new Sioux Falls arena has been circulating for years. They say Sioux Falls still has a lot of obstacles to tackle before it could be built.
