This is drunk and drugged driving month. But why December? It's because statistically the holidays have the highest rate for impaired driving arrest and accidents.
The Reality Education and Prevention Program at Mercy Medical Center is stressing that driving drunk kills. Not only is alcohol a threat to drivers, so are illegal and prescription drugs. Especially during this time of year.
REAP Representative, Linda Kalin, says, "It's a very happy time of the year and a lot of nice celebrations and holiday parties, but often there's alcohol involved or even some of the over the counter cold and cough meds – we're in the season."
Studies show the increase of impaired drivers on the roads over the holidays generally lies among 20–40 year olds.
Officials want everyone to know that impaired drivers not only put them and their passengers in danger, but everyone else who shares the road with them as well.
