Highway 48 near Akron Closed

A river runs through it. Highway 48, near Akron, Iowa that is.

Rosalynn Lamie from Vermillion, SD, says, "The road is just covered in water."

And for some folks, that makes for a flood of inconvenience.

Lamie says, "My gas light just turned on, so I have to go all the way back through Hawarden. There's another road and that one's closed too and I don't have a cell phone with me – I forgot it at home. There's just nothing I can do. It's very, very frustrating."

And nobody understands that better than local emergency service officials.

Jon Coyle, Akron Emergency Service Director, says, "It's a huge inconvenience. There's one other bridge about 5 miles south of here – that's been out for almost a year now, so this was pretty much the main route for everybody in South Dakota into Iowa."

But since it'll take another 6 inches before officials begin any type of sandbagging, Coyle says there's not much he and other city representatives can do to dry up concerns.

Coyle says, "Pretty much just gotta wait for the water to do its thing – there's not too many things we can do to control it at this stage – just wait and see, I guess."

But no matter what path folks near Akron, Iowa take around the flooded highway, officials are reminding folks not to go through it.

Remember it only takes 2 inches of water to sweep away a vehicle. Officials don't expect the highway to dry up until the end of the weekend, into next week.
