It's no surprise to drivers that the I-29 Improvement Project is underway. With portions of the interstate within the Sioux City corridor being torn up and closed down, the project seems to be causing more than just a big inconvenience.
Reduced speeds and reduced lanes can sometimes add up to increased collisions. Those affiliated with the Iowa Department of Transportation understand the threat construction poses to the public, but say safety is always a number one concern.
Engineer with IDOT, Dean Herbst, says, "The areas are tight at times where we need to reduce lanes and maybe reduce speeds in order to keep everybody safe but the traffic control is intended to protect both the traveling public and the workers on site."
Some drivers who travel I-29 on a regular basis say more road construction is no excuse for more accidents.
I-29 traveler from McCook Lake, Lavern Schroeder, says, "If you slow down and obey the speed limit and watch the people ahead of you, instead of watching the construction, you'll be fine."
Schroeder adds that he is always a careful driver, especially through construction sites.
"I always try to give at least one to two car lengths ahead of me."
And that's a smart move, since Sioux City Police, say rear-end collisions are the number one type of accidents that occur in work zones.
Those behind the I-29 Improvement Project are trying to work as quickly and efficiently as possible, but until the construction comes to an end, Sioux City Police Officer, Jeremy McClure, says,
"It's gonna be more on the actual driver to start thinking more cautiously. Start slowing down, start selecting alternative routes if possible and just being more aware within construction zones - staying off that cell phone, slowing down and giving yourself more space and reaction time."
And if you choose to disregard these tips, the penalty could be much bigger than a doubled fine or citation.
The Iowa Department of Transportation also wants to remind the public that by dialing 5-1-1 on your phone, you can get the latest, up-to-date information on construction projects in your area.
