ACLU launches campaign to get apology from SD cops

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union has launched a public campaign to force the Rapid City police department to apologize for outing a lesbian Air Force sergeant who was later discharged.

ACLU South Dakota executive director Robert Doody says he's not satisfied with the police department's response to a complaint filed for Jene Newsome. So, the ALCU is asking people to send letters to Rapid City officials, seeking an apology.

Newsome's honorable discharge under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy came only after police officers saw an Iowa marriage certificate in her home and told officials at the nearby Ellsworth Air Force Base.

The complaint says the officers violated her privacy.

Police Chief Steve Allender says his officers acted appropriately.
