South Sioux City Schools Launching Free Breakfast Trial

In a little less than two weeks, South Sioux City school officials will be trying out a new school breakfast plan that will leave no child left with an empty tummy.

Some call it the most important meal of the day, others call it brain food, the kids will probably just call it yummy, but little do they know, breakfast can make or break a productive day in school. That's why starting April 27th South Sioux City school officials are doing a test run for a program called Universal Breakfast, so all kids get a nutritious meal before they start their day.

"We know that not all students come to school with a breakfast, that's a national norm, but the issue becomes, how would we make it work here in our district" Said Pat Nauroth, South Sioux City Schools Assistant Superintendent.

School administration says they'll sort out the details as they go, but right now, they expect funding will come from food services, the same money that is reserved for free and reduced lunches.

The free breakfast trial will be offered in paper sacks to students during the first hour of school, everything is organic, and meets federal nutrition guidelines.

"We thought it was important enough and that it might affect kids in a positive way, if we at least pilot it, we'll see" Said Nauroth.

It's a program school officials hope will not only beat the hunger pangs, but help students excel in the classroom.

If the universal breakfast program is a success through the end of this school year, administration says they'll consider offering it again next year.

The program will first be offered to kindergarten through 5th grade students in South Sioux. Parents will be sent a letter outlining the details of the program.
