IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - After 36 years of delivering the mail in Iowa City, Kathleen Cariens is retiring.

Cariens was the city's first female mail carrier.

In the early 1970s, she constantly dealt with one question; "What do we call you?" She told the people on her route to call her Kathy.

Cariens' last day for the post office will be Thursday. On that day she will say goodbye to the friends she's made on her route and at the post office. It is the only job she's ever had.

The 61-year-old Cariens says she is looking forward to quiet mornings relaxing with her husband, Ken, who also is a retired postal carrier.

Cariens' last week at work comes during a week when mail carriers haul some of their biggest loads of the year.
