Workers gathered tonight to memorialize Iowans who lost their lives while on the job. The gathering held special meaning.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York, when almost 150 workers died, because the factory doors were locked.
With unions under attack across the country, those in attendance say its important the 49 Iowans who died while at work last year did not do so in vain.
"People shouldn't have to give their life to earn a paycheck to support their families, and we're gathering here tonight to remember those people, and to try and push for greater protections on the job site," said John Hamm, President of the Northwest Iowa Labor Council
Hamm called out each of the 49 Iowans' names, and said, "Gone, but not forgotten," for each person. A candle represented each life. 2010 also represented the 40th anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
