Gov. Heineman Signs Nebraska Roads Proposal

Posted: Updated:

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman has signed a contested bill that would use state sales tax money to pay for road upgrades.

The bill sponsored by Valentine Sen. Deb Fischer would dedicate one-quarter of a cent out of Nebraska's 5.5-cent sales tax to city, county and state roads projects.

The funding would start in 2013, continue for 20 years, and add roughly $70 million annually to the revenue already generated by gas taxes and vehicle fees.

Supporters said the bill was important to upgrade the state's deteriorating road network and spur economic growth. The measure has won support from the Lincoln, Omaha, and Norfolk Area Chambers of Commerce, trucking groups and various cities and counties.
