The Bunea Vista County Sheriff's Office has had reports of a possible scam in the last week. According the Sheriff's Office, parents and grandparents have been receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be a son/daughter or grandson/granddaughter and needing money to bond out of jail. Many times the caller is stating that they have been arrested in a foreign country or another state. The caller is asking that money be wired to them. The callers are very proficient in having family history and knowledge of names of family members. Another scam of a similar nature has the caller claiming to be the son/daughter or grandson/granddaughter claiming to have been in a bad accident and needing emergency money sent to them. With all of these calls, the caller will claim to be a family member and have excuses for why their voices sounds different than it normally does.
Beware of the scams that have been around for the past few years. After a decline in these types of scams there has been a recent increase in them. Law enforcement urges everyone who receives a call of this nature to check with other family members before sending any money and make sure a real emergency does or does not exist.
