Johnson Announces Over $560,000 for Housing in Indian Country in South Dakota

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) announced that tribal communities in South Dakota will receive a total of $563,361 in federal grant funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The funding is part of the Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) Program and will be used for housing activities in these Indian communities.

The Yankton Sioux Tribe Housing Authority will receive a $481,413 grant and the Flandreau Santee Sioux Housing Authority will receive an $81,948 grant.

"I am pleased that these housing organizations will receive this funding to make housing improvements in Indian Country," Johnson said. "As Chairman of the Banking Committee and a member of the Indian Affairs and Appropriations Committees, I will continue to support important programs that help grow our tribal communities."

In February, Senator Johnson was named Chairman of the powerful Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee which is in charge of all housing policy, including joint responsibility with the Indian Affairs Committee, for authorizing the IHBG Program.

The Indian Housing Block Grant Program (IHBG) was established in 1996 by the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act (NAHASDA), a bill Johnson sponsored. The bill reorganized the system of housing assistance for Native Americans and created two grant programs, the Indian Housing Block Grant and the Title VI Loan Guarantee. IHBG funding can be used on a range of housing activities for eligible families including housing development, housing services and activities that provide new approaches to create housing.
