The U.S. Postal Service delivers a devastating message to Sioux City. It's going to close the city's mail processing center and move it to Sioux Falls by October.
When people in Sioux City found out the processing facility is closing, many just exhaled and shook their head in disbelief.
"it made me sick," said Lin Peterson of Sioux City.
Most of the people we spoke with say they want the processing plant to stay in town...
"We're a big enough city that we need this processing plant here," said Barbara Luft, of Sioux City.
The postal service says because of a drastic reduction in people sending letters, the U.S.P.S says it needs to shrink.
And closing the Sioux City processing facility could save the postal service more than $2 million, but people in Sioux City aren't buying it.
"We have so few things. It seems like we're neglected, compared to the rest of the state and the area. It would be nice to have that here too," said Gene Groetken of Moville, IA.
The postal service says workers will be relocated to Sioux Falls, or reassigned to vacant positions.
They also say 97 percent of the people's mail won't be affected, but that didn't ease the pain...
"No, it doesn't make it any better. No, because I wanted it to stay here. I mean, so our mail delivery won't be affected, but I still want it to stay in Sioux City," said Judy Jones of Sioux City.
A number of politicians have spoken out against the postal service's decision including U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, Congressman Steve King, and Sioux City Mayor Mike Hobart.
A number of people we talked with seemed confused and thought the downtown post office was closing, but that's not the case. Only the processing center will be affected.
