On Sunday June 19th, 2011 at 3:37 p.m. the Buena Vista County communications center received a 911 call of a 2 vehicle accident with multiple injuries at the intersection of county blacktop M-54 and Highway 10 near Marathon. Two victims had to be extradited who were trapped.
Initial investigation at the scene indicates that a southbound passenger car being driven by Brennen Walter, age 18 of Ft. Dodge failed to stop at a stop sign at Hwy 10 and M-54 and proceeded into the path of an eastbound SUV driven by Ron Hapes, age 36 of Laurens. The Hapes vehicle collided with the Walter vehicle in the intersection causing both vehicles to enter the southwest ditch. The Walter vehicle had 4 other passengers in the vehicle. One of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The fatality victim, a 17 year old female from Ft. Dodge was transported to Storm Lake by the Buena Vista County medical Examiners Office. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
The other 4 victims from the Walter vehicle were taken to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake with major injuries. Two of these victims, Peyton White, age 17 of Carroll, IA and Abigail Biggins, age 18 of Ft. Dodge were both air lifted to Mercy Hospital in Sioux City. Peyton's condition is not being released at this time. And Abigail, who is now at UNO in Omaha, is listed in critical condition.
The other two victims in the Walter vehicle, Brennen Walter and Amy Edge, age 18 of Ft. Dodge were treated at BVRMC with major injuries. At this time, we don't know their conditions.
The driver of the other vehicle, Ron Hapes, was treated and released from BVRMC.
