Washington, DC—U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated Union County a contiguous disaster area. The designation will allow some residents in the area affected by flooding to be eligible for federal assistance.
"I am pleased that the USDA has made this designation to help producers whose operations have been hurt by major flooding," Johnson said. "This is just one designation and I expect more to come from the Administration. I am going to continue to work to make sure folks across the state who have been impacted by flooding have access to assistance."
Under the designation announced by USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, producers are eligible to apply for Farm Service Agency (FSA) Emergency Loans and the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Program. FSA will take into account losses, security available and repayment ability.
