$4 Million Direct Loan For The City Of Akron To Build Nursing Home

WASHINGTON , D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today applauded the U.S. Department of Agriculture's investment of a $4 million direct loan for the City of Akron to build a 45-bed nursing home. In addition to the jobs created as a result of the construction, the project will save 60 existing, permanent jobs. The announcement came as part of investments in 33 states and one territory that will create jobs and improve the quality of life in rural communities across the nation. Funding comes from the USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Program.

"Each dollar invested in rural development goes toward revitalizing communities, strengthening the local economy and providing a service to area residents. With funding for Akron, Iowa gains the added benefit of job creation and preservation, which is so critical to our local economy," said Harkin. "I also congratulate the City of Blockton, who shared in today's announcement and will be able to better protect its citizen with the addition of a new fire truck."

In addition to the Akron funding, the City of Blockton was also awarded a $50,000 grant to purchase a fire truck and related equipment. Currently, the fire department has just one pumper truck to cover a 70 square mile area.

Harkin is a senior member and former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. He is also a member of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that funds the USDA.
