It's a one 120 day project but even though we're about 30 days in, over the next week we're going to see a significant change here at the John Morrell plant.
The southern section of the John Morrell plant has already been torn down and by the end of the week, the building will no longer be standing.
Over the past month crews have been stripping the interior down to the steel and concrete, as well as clearing the roof of concrete as well.
"So there was a lot of work that went into it over the past month to get it prepared so it could come down quickly," tells Darrel Bullock, Inspector Services Supervisor.
Once the building is torn down the longest part of the project is clearing out the lot.
The rubble will be sorted. Steel and concrete will be reused.
The city is saving 390 thousand dollars by recycling the concrete for a new road and storm sewer.
"It's a win win on this deal. It's a very exciting project. We're happy to see it, it's a new road going in, new storm sewers going in. It helps the city save hundreds of thousands of dollars in the realignment of utilities when the I-29 project comes through," tells Bullock.
But the biggest win through all of this?
Is that soon another building will rise, bringing new jobs to Sioux City.
