Northern Sun Conference leader Winona State shot a sizzling 71 percent (15 of 21) in the second half to snap a 26-26 halftime tie as the NCAA Division II 8th-ranked Warriors pulled away for a 61-47 men's college basketball win over Wayne State Friday evening at McCown Gymnasium in Winona, Minnesota.  The host Warriors improved to 16-2 on the season and 11-1 in the conference while WSC falls to 4-12 and 3-9 in the NSIC.

            The Wildcats jumped out quickly on the host Warriors, taking a 10-2 lead in the first 2:38 of the game on an Amry Shelby three pointer.  WSC took a pair of nine point leads at 15-6 and 17-8, but Winona State held the ‘Cats scoreless for a stretch of 8:35 while the Warriors went on a 15-0 run to take a 21-17 lead.  Wildcat senior guard Vontrell Seroyer ended the scoreless drought with a pair of free throws at the 5:02 mark followed by baskets from Ryan Rolfzen and Adol Aluong to put WSC back in front 23-21 with 3:23 left in the half.  After Winona State took a 26-23 lead, Shelby canned a three pointer with 45 seconds left before halftime to forge a 26-26 tie at halftime.

            Winona State opened the second half strong, taking an eight point lead at 40-32 with 13:48 remaining on a Zander Culver three pointer.  Amry Shelby made a jumper and three pointer to pull WSC within three at 40-37 with 12:31 left, but Winona State reeled off the next five points to go back up eight at 45-37. Baskets by Adol Aluong and Derrell Williams got the Wildcats within six at 45-41 with 10:25 to play.

            The Warriors put the game out of reach with a 10-0 run while holding WSC scoreless for the next 6:06, taking a 55-41 lead with 4:19 to play, and Winona State went on to the 61-47 win over the Wildcats.

            Amry Shelby scored 15 points to lead Wayne State in scoring followed by Derrell Williams with 12 and Vontrell Seroyer 11.  The Wildcats made 18 of 44 shots from the field for 40.9 percent including 5 of 10 behind the three point line.  WSC was 6 for 11 (54.5 percent) at the free throw stripe.

            Taylor Cameron scored a game-high 20 points to pace Winona State with Zander Culver (16) and Grant Johnson (12) also reaching double digits for the Warriors.  Winona State shot 60.5 percent from the field, making 26 of 43 shots including 5 of 15 from the three point line and 4 of 8 at the foul stripe.  WSC held Winona State center Clayton Vette, who was averaging 17.0 points and 7.2 rebounds entering the game, to just two points and three rebounds in the contest.

            Wayne State held a 26-23 edge in rebounding over Winona State with Ayron Worthington and Derrell Williams each grabbing four rebounds for the Wildcats while CJ Erickson and Taylor Cameron grabbed five boards apiece for the Warriors.

            Wayne State will be in action again Saturday evening visiting Upper Iowa in a Northern Sun Conference contest scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m.
