Iowa Attorney General's Wants More Protection For Mobile Home Tenants

Posted: Updated:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _ The Iowa attorney general's office is seeking more protection for owners of mobile homes located on leased land, saying they are especially vulnerable to landlords.

A Senate panel approved a measure Monday backed by the attorney general on a two to one vote that would require landlords at mobile home parks to provide a legitimate reason for terminating or not renewing a land lease. That isn't now mandated.

Bill Brauch, director of the agency's Consumer Protection Division, says the cost of moving a mobile home often makes it impossible for tenants, resulting in home owners being afraid to come forward with complaints for fear of losing their homes.

The bill also requires a one-year lease for new tenants and that landlords give tenants 14 days to pay past due rent.
