It's good news for Iowa National Guard members. More money is being put in the guard's Education Assistance Program to help soldiers pay for college.

The guard was prepared to lower the tuition assistance for national guard members in the spring semester from 90% to 50%. But today Governor Terry Branstad signed a bill that will provide $1.3 million in additional resources for the guard's education program.

Recently the demand for this program went up after the state saw the biggest deployment since World War II. Six hundred more soldiers applied for the program for the 2011-2012 school year than the year before.

"This is a big step forward and it's certainly a benefit to people that have significant sacrifices on behalf of our state and country and so I'm very proud to be able to sign this legislation as the first bill of this 2012 session of the Iowa legislature."

Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds and Major Gen. Timothy Orr, head of the Iowa National Guard joined Branstad during the signing of the bill. Now the national guard education assistance program now has a total of $4.4 million in funds.
