Officials at Sioux Gateway Airport/Col. Bud Day Field in Sioux City reported Thursday that
an accredited, four-year Midwest university and a local community college are exploring the offering of a flight school at Sioux Gateway Airport for the fall semester 2012.
The proposed flight school would offer ground and flight training, but would also allow students to pursue degrees and careers in commercial aviation, including flight operations, air traffic control and airport management. In an effort to encourage careers in aviation and increase the utilization of airport facilities, the Sioux Gateway Airport Board of Trustees is asking any community members interested in enrolling in an aviation flight program to complete an interest survey.
The Board of Trustees would like to encourage a local community college to provide an aviation degree with transfer options to a fourĀ]year college or university. "A flight school at the airport will bring increased activity and aviation enthusiasts to the airport," said Grady Marx, Sioux Gateway Airport Board member. " The ability to partner with a local community college and a recognized leader in flight schools makes this a desirable project not only for Sioux
Gateway Airport but for the entire Siouxland community."
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in Iowa for Commercial Pilots is expected to increase 15% from now until 2018, with an average salary of $66,000.
