A food company is recalling more than 15,000 pails of eggs made in Siouxland, because they may be contaminated with listeria.
Michael Foods isn't just one of the biggest employers in Wakefield, Nebraska, it's one of the biggest employers in Dixon County.
Michael Foods says it's voluntarily recalling 15,000 pails of hard cooked eggs sold in more than half the country.
In a statement the company said,
"We reached the decision to expand this recall after a thorough investigation, which indicated a specific repair project that took place in the packaging room as the likely source of the contamination. We have taken a number of corrective steps to address the issue and prevent recurrence."
Side effects of listeria include nausea, vomiting, and a stomach ache, but it wouldn't bother most people.
"Typically the average person, otherwise healthy, not pregnant etcetera, they might just have a stomach ache, and never know anything about it," said Dr. Thomas Benzoni, Mercy Medical center.
But listeria can be very dangerous for the elderly, people with HIV, and pregnant women.
"It can be lethal, and pregnant women are the special concern group here, because they can have a fairly mild infection, but it can affect their baby, and kill the baby before its born," said Dr. Benzoni
Currently, there have been no reported cases of illness from the eggs.
