Community of Onawa React to Weekend Shooting

Posted: Updated:

"Well, it's just kind of surprising for a small town like this. We just don't have things like that happen here."

Sunday's shooting has Dennis Smith, the parts manager at Schenkleberg Implement in Onawa, questioning how safe his community really is.

He adds, "I never lock my shop, I'm gonna keep my personal shop locked up from now on. A little bit more security's what we need."

It was all the talk at the local diner, too.

Shane Weber, from Onawa, says, "It's a little shocking, you know, not used to things like this happening, but..."

The owner of the Onawa Cafe, Matt Pawlowski, says, "It can happen anywhere, it's not just major metropolitan areas, it can happen in your small town."

And while they couldn't release many details, that is something Onawa police could confirm.

Assistant Police Chief at the Onawa police Department, Jim Fouts, says, "We probably get one or two shootings or stabbings per year, so this is not an uncommon call, it's few and far between, but generally, what I tell everybody is everything that happens in a larger city will happen in a smaller city, it's just, it's more spread out."

And even though it happened to a smaller city, police say there's no reason the people of Onawa should fear for their safety.

In fact, in a bizarre change of events, the police are now saying this isn't a burglary after all. Nor are they considering this a violent crime.

Police won't say whether it was accidental or why the victim, Darren Hieber and his employee, Brady Chapman who shot Hieber in the leg were even at the old North Side shop, together in the first place.

Chapman was interviewed Sunday night, but no arrests have been made.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations and the Monona County Sheriff's Office are assisting the Onawa Police Department with the investigation.

No other suspects are being sought at this time.
