Location for New, SC Casino Could Soon Be Announced

Posted: Updated:

The old Warrior Hotel? Or near the proposed, Cone Park. Maybe even the old Bomgaar's site.

Dane Bobier, a cook at Fourth Street Cafe in downtown, Sioux City, says, "I've been hearing rumors that they're gonna put it probably in the Bomgaar's parking lot."

Members of the Missouri River Historical Development board, or MRHD, the gaming license holders, aren't saying whether any of those speculated sites are being seriously considered for Argosy's land–based replacement.

MRHD President, Mark Monson, says, "There's always fear that land becomes more expensive than it ought to be. That's always a factor."

But the city and casino operator, Penn National Gaming, have made it clear: they want it downtown.

Sioux City Mayor, Bob Scott, says, "Obviously, I would like it in downtown Sioux City, simply because it should generate some additional traffic to the downtown area."

Eric Schippers, with Penn National, says, "We think that would provide a significant shot in the arm for downtown Sioux City businesses, so that's where we're focusing all of our efforts."

While MRHD isn't against a downtown location, there's always the issue of...

"Whether it will fit or not. So if they need a large amount of ground, it obviously isn't going to go downtown, however, if they can work that out, that's an option," adds Monson.

But the serious options won't be announced until a few legal matters between Penn and MRHD are officially wrapped up, which, MRHD hopes will be just days, as opposed to weeks or months.
