It unfolded like a scene out of a crime drama.

A suspect in a shooting on Tuesday in Norfolk was located in nearby Stanton, holed up in a mobile home at 106 10th Street.

Carlos Arevalo-Martinez is the lone person of interest in the shooting that critically injured 33-year old Edna Gutierrez in a Norfolk home.

Thursday afternoon, in Stanton, a 4-hour stand-off began between police and Arevalo-Martinez.

At one point, what sounded like 'shots' were fired. They weren't firearms, instead, they were a tactical operation: Tear gas.

But when police went in, the suspect was gone.

Stanton County Sheriff Michael Unger said, "In that time, he slipped away. It's an unfortunate deal, nobody feels worse than we do. But obviously we've done everything we could to get him into custody."

But, wait, it's not over.

Minutes later, Arevalo-Martinez was found hiding underneath a trailer. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

"He did appear to be suffering some effects of gas inhalation," said Sheriff Unger.

Finally, the town breathed a sigh of relief. Stanton students, on lockdown for 5 hours, were allowed to go home.

Stanton Superintendent Michael Sieh said, "We never really felt like our kids were in danger at all. That's why we wanted to keep them in the building for their own safety and it also keeps them out of the area in which the police are conducting their investigation."

Martinez is under arrest for First Degree Assault and Use of a Firearm to Commit a Felony.
