Army Corp Says 2011 Missouri River Flood Was Unpreventable

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released another report examining last year's flooding along the Missouri River and they say more free space would have reduced, but not eliminated last year's flooding.

It shows that providing additional flood control storage space would enhance flood risk reductions if we were to see a repeat of last years flood event.  However, it also states that due to the tremendous amount of water runoff the Missouri saw last year, the addition of flood space would not have prevented widespread damages.

It goes on to say that if flood storage space was increased 30 percent, peak releases could potentially be reduced from 160 thousand cubic feet per second to 100 thousand.
