Norfolk –May 24, 2012:  Faith Regional Health Services was notified by Emergency Services that Tyson Foods Company in Madison, Nebraska experienced a chemical disaster at their plant, with approximately 30 Tyson employees that were directly exposed to ammonia and would need medical care.  Ten people were transported by ambulances to Faith Regional at 8:45 p.m. on May 24, 2012.  Faith Regional immediately activated its Emergency Operations Plan.

"Patients were quickly assessed for severity of inhalation and potential contamination," said Kelly Driscoll, VP of Patient Care Services.  "All ten patients were found to suffer from minor chemical inhalation, were treated and then released."

Friday Update from Tyson Foods:

Officials at Tyson say the plant was not in full production at the time of the leak. However, there were about 150 workers present.  Forty of them were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.  They have all been released.

The leak has been repaired and the plant has reopened.   No word yet on the cause of the ammonia leak.
