Folks in Dakota Dunes are working hard to build a new permanent levee to prevent another devastating flood, but not everyone's happy about how it's going to be paid for.

One year ago things were much different in Dakota Dunes.  Things are almost back to normal now, but not quite there."

Last year they were shoveling, sandbagging, and building a levee as high as possible.  This year they're working to build permanent protection from the flood.

"We're taking down a temporary levee on hole 17 and 18 of Dakota Dunes Country Club, and we're replacing it with a permanent levee, so that section will be much better protected," said Jeff Dooley, Dakota Dunes Manager.

Folks who live in the Dunes have been told that they'll have to share more than $2 million in flood repair costs, which means everybody will have to pay for the levee at the country club; even if they aren't members.

"Kind of mixed feelings. I can see why they want to draw from the community association, yet I don't feel that it's entirely fair to put that on people who won't want to be part of the club," said Matt Eggers, who lives in Dakota Dunes, SD.

Dooley says the levee on the golf course helped protect the whole community, so everybody should share in paying for it.

"We're not rebuilding the golf course. The golf course is rebuilding the golf course with some help from the community. So that argument, or that reaction is understandable, but I think that if you look at the big picture without them, we would all be in trouble," said Dooley.

While workers remove the temporary levees, Dooley says the banks are being prepared for flood protection, should it be necessary.
