Today, the Sioux City Police installed a four–part camera system on top of one of its police cars.

The system is called "license plate recognition". The cameras will scan license plates and detect for crimes like a wanted person, stolen plates or parole violators.

The Sioux City Police say, the new technology will help catch crime in less time.

Lieutenant Mark Kirkpatrick of the Sioux City Police said, "An officer will be able to be in a squad car for an eight–hour shift and be able to only see and run a certain number of plates. This technology helps us run thousands of plates in the same amount of time."

The squad car with the system is currently not out on the street yet, but it is expected to be up and running in about 30 days.
