Eighteen commercial trucks were taken off the road today after a surprise inspection in South Sioux City, NE. The checkpoint was set up at East Fifth and B Streets to inspect the vehicles. While the inspection caused headaches for some, one driver we spoke with appreciated the checkup. Bill Gutschow, a driver for Porsch Quality Siding, says, "You do general maintenance I mean all the time. And you always want to make sure that things are upright. But anytime they can give you a little extra help...extra help never hurts."

Troopers were on site and checked all areas of the commercial vehicles including under the hood and even under the chassis. Officers say the inspections are done to ensure the safety of both the truckers and other drivers. One of the Nebraska troopers on site, Kevin Finn, says, "We try to reach out to areas that don't go across our scale facilities on a regular basis. (The trucks) don't get inspected very often. We cover local areas, try to find those vehicles and make sure they're staying in compliance with the federal regulations."

This is the tenth surprise inspection checkpoint that the troopers have set up this year with the most recent one in Norfolk. At the South Sioux City checkpoint, there were a total of 33 inspections, 129 violations, and $3,150 in fines issued.
