Several people who live along Correctionville Road say that even though the speed limit signs are clearly marked, some people are still going way too fast. Ray Shumansky, whose family owns a house on the road, says, "The people are coming down and you'd think you're on the interstate when they're driving down here."
The stretch through Sioux City has been the site of fifteen accidents in the past two years including a fatal motorcycle crash on Thursday afternoon. Jim Shumansky thinks people are rushing to and from work along the windy, hilly road. "It's usually the mornings when they go fast. And then evenings after work they speed through here. And the police do come out and they do patrol. But you know, they can't be here all the time."
The Sioux City Police Department says it knows there's a problem on Correctionville Road and it's actively taking steps to slow people down. Sergeant Terry Ivener of Sioux City Traffic Enforcement says, "The (digital) speed sign first and foremost. It's out there, it's in the public view. It's been very effective. When citizens do call for service we're out there, we've had citizens call in wanting radar checks."
Most of all, folks say they really want drivers to remember that there are children and pets playing in the yards along the road. Jeanne Gates says, "It might seem like you're out in the country but you're still in the city limits. And you really just need to slow down and obey the traffic, you know, speed limit laws."
We asked Officer Ivener if there would be increased enforcement along Correctionville Road in light of the recent accident. He said the police department is continuing to do the best job it can with the resources available.
