Saturday, the Sioux City Police Department partnered up with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to support National "Prescription Drug Take-Back" Day.

The day gave Siouxlanders the opportunity to turn in any unused, unneeded, or expired prescription medication.

Police said the scheduled "take-back" day helps keep prescribed drugs from being improperly disposed and out of harms way of children and anybody else in the house.

"Really quite frankly, the less that you have in the medicine cabinet the less chance that you have of it of people abusing the medication in the future," said Sergeant Kevin Heineman with the Sioux City Police Department.

Five Sioux City businesses took part in the "take back" day, and a total of about 112 pounds of prescription drugs were handed in.
