Vermillion, SD - The South Dakota Coyotes were in position to win their first ever Missouri Valley Conference game Saturday, but they couldn't hold off the undefeated Illinois State Red Birds as they lost, 34-31.

Josh Vander Maten threw for 253 yards, completing three touchdowns to three different receivers. Marcus Sims ran for 120 yards on just 14 carries with a touchdown -- he also hauled in a 41-yard swing pass for a score.

Mike Zimmer had a team high 13 tackles, as he also assisted on a sack. Nate Palmer added five tackles (two for loss) and one sack.

The Yotes will host Western Illinois (2-2) next Saturday at the Dakota Dome. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. CST.
