Candidates for South Dakota's District 16 Senate seat squared off on Tuesday night.

Republican incumbent Dan Lederman and Democratic challenger Mike O'Connor took questions from members of the Dakota Valley Business Council.

Lederman of Dakota Dunes, was elected to the South Dakota State Senate in 2010 after serving in the House of Representatives for two years.

O'Connor is from Alcester, and previously served in the house for three terms from 1988 to 1993.

Lederman said, "Well I think that there are some marked differences between myself and my opponent but that's part of the election cycle and as we get closer to the election day I think the difference will be much more clear."

O'Connor said, "I did serve in the legislature for eight years prior to this time.  Then I went to work for President Clinton as a political employee so I do have some experience.  Look at my record."

District 16 house candidates Jim Bolin and Ann Tornberg also took questions.  Incumbent State Representative Patty Miller was unable to attend the forum.
