For its second year in a row, Siouxlanders joined thousands of Iowans on Wednesday for the "Healthiest State Walk".
Individual walkers as well as organized groups, walked just under one mile to help spread awareness of staying healthy.
"The walk I think is just one example of what we each can do to take one little step in becoming healthier," said walker Sue Brown.
The walk is put on by the Healthiest State Initiative and Blue Zones Project which are privately led, public efforts that work to improve the well-being of Iowa.
Currently, Sioux City is trying to finalize its position as a Blue Zone demonstration site, and hopes the walk will help bring the city one step closer to that.
"It's more of a symbolic gesture saying, 'Hey we want to live healthier, happier lives.' We want to be part of this. It's showing our continuous support of the blue zones and the state," said Derek Carmona, a"Healthiest State Walk" Coordinator.
New to the walk this year was the "Talk the Walk" contest in which folks were asked to recruit as many other walkers as possible.
Carmona said he is confident that this year's number of walkers surpassed last years which was about 4,000.
