Sioux City Firefighters honored their fallen brethren this morning. Citizens along with past and present Sioux City Firefighters gathered at the court house this morning to remember those who fell in the line of duty. Those gathered celebrated the lives of the twelve firefighters who risked everything. Kirk Wicker and Michael Johnson both died thirty years ago when the floor collapsed in a hen house where they were trying to extinguish a blaze.

We spoke with a few firefighters who recalled that day. Robert Burg, a retired Sioux City Fire Rescue Captain, says, "Well, actually they'd been killed because of the floor that was not reinforced like it should have been with rebar. It caved in on them and killed them both." Terry Krommenhoek, another former Sioux City Firefighter, says, "It's always an emotional experience thinking back to our brother firefighters. Up to the ones that I have known and were friends."

Wreaths were laid and a silver bell was struck to honor each of the twelve members of Sioux City Fire Rescue. The ceremony is held annually in Sioux City.
