Whether it's an elaborate flash mob proposal or a giant billboard sign asking your high school sweetheart to homecoming, popping a question of any kind has become quite the production these days. Sam Avery, a senior at North High School in Sioux City, says he had the idea of using a billboard to ask a girl out, for a long time, but he was just waiting for the right girl.
"And I thought it'd be perfect to use it on her because I had this huge crush on her. And it worked!," said Avery.
It just so happens Avery's family owns a sign making company in town, so he came up with a design...
"It said "Q" as in question, then Maria will you go to homecoming with me? Then "A" as in answer, 'yes' or 'no' and then circle one."
And as soon as the sign went up, Avery took his crush to the corner of 11th and Pierce Street for her big surprise.
"Amazing. Crazy Amazing. Like when I first saw it, I could not stop talking about how cool it was. Like that's really all I said, over and over and over again," said Maria Flores.
"It was a cool sight to see, that I made someone that happy," said Avery.
Avery Outdoor, the company that made the billboard sign, says it created a similar sign last year, for a wedding proposal, and it's a trend that seems to be getting more popular.
"It seems to becoming a big deal, how you ask. I think we'll see more of it in the future, but we're just starting to get to that part," said Chris Trudeau, Avery Outdoor.
And from the sound of it, this big gesture worked out well.
