College can certainly be expensive, but two West High students received some help Thursday in covering that cost. Joe Keegan and Tanner Christiansen – two juniors at Sioux City West High School – were picked in a random drawing of seven thousand Iowa students to receive a one thousand dollar college savings account. It's a part of GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) which is targeted at getting kids interested in higher education.

The two students were excited to have been selected. Tanner says, "It's really cool. I appreciate everything that they've done for us." Joe was also grateful, saying, "It feels great to be selected and to have all these people come up and watch us get the thousand dollar scholarship."

The check was presented by Iowa State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald. Both Christiansen and Keegan intend to study engineering in college.
