Most of the cats found in an abandoned Sioux City home on October 1st had to be euthanized.

According to Cindy Rarrat with Sioux City Animal Adoption and Rescue, 57 of the nearly 70 cats found alone in a home on the near Northside had to be put down, because of fatal feline leukemia. That's a highly contagious disease among cats.

12 cats were able to be saved and will spend about two months in quarantine, before being retested. If they still test negative for the virus then they will be eligible for adoption.

The cats were removed from the home at 1818 Grandview. The homeowner, Mark Lanning, has been charged with several counts of animal neglect. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, October 15th.
