A relatively new bike design is being tested right here in Siouxland, And it could make training wheels a thing of the past. Undergrads and graduate students at the University of South Dakota are conducting a research study involving pedal-less bikes. The company, Strider Bikes International, recently reached out to USD to conduct a balance study in hopes of proving that these bikes really do work. Andrew Schim, a professor of Kinesiology and Sports Science at USD, is leading the month-long balance study.

"In terms of observation wise, it's pretty obvious that these bikes are improving motor skills in the students," said Schim.

There's a total of 25 kids, ages 3-5,  taking part; none of which have been previously exposed to any type of bicycling. At the beginning of the study, each child's individual stability was tested using a balance plate. It's checked every week, to see if there is any improvement. The goal is to see if these bikes can develop a child's motor skills enough, so that when it comes time to get on a real bike, there will be little to no fear of falling.

"This bike may eliminate the use of tri-cycles. It may get to the point that the first bike a two-wheel non pedal bike," said Schim.

Schim says this is also a great opportunity for his students to get a hands- on experience and put theory to the test.
