JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP) _ The Iowa Air National Guard has its first female brigadier general.

The guard says Jennifer Walter, of Indianola, was promoted to brigadier general on Oct. 14 during a ceremony at the 132nd Fighter Wing in Des Moines. She will assume duties as the Iowa Air Guard's chief of staff.

Walter was promoted to colonel in 2005. Since January 2011, she has served as the 132nd Fighter Wing's vice wing commander.

Walter is a native of Springfield, Mo., and graduated from North High School in Sioux City in 1974. She began her military career in 1975 in the Kansas Air National Guard before joining the Iowa Air Guard later in the year.

She has been deployed to Kuwait and Afghanistan.
