"Trick or Treat!"
And there it is. Those three little words that put your kids in candy heaven. M&M's, Reese's, Kit- Kats, Twizzlers, the sugary treats are in end-less supply. But all it really takes is a couple pieces of candy to put things in to perspective.
"In our pile of candy here we have the equivalent of three cups of sugar," said Allison Rossow, dietician at Hy-Vee in Sioux City.
Rossow says if your kid's goody bag has more than 100 pieces of candy in it, you're looking at around 4,500 calories and 3 cups of sugar. And to some parents, those numbers are spooky.
"We don't want that much sugar. And also we don't want them to have full access to all that candy by themselves because they'll just keep eating it and eating it. So we like to have fruits and vegetables before all that stuff," said Melissa Dodge, Sioux City.
But some parents say, it's one night a year, when their kids get to go a little crazy with the candy.
"I just remember being a kid and having a blast and eating all the candy and my mom just let us have so much fun, so we try to carry on that tradition," said Shawn Donnelly, Sioux City.
The trick to eating all these treats, moderation. And if that doesn't work, it's best to set aside some candy to keep, and give the rest away.
